11/17/08 Johnson Wins the Championship
For the third year in a row Jimmie Johnson has won the Cup Championship. Carl Edwards finished second in the standings 69 points in back of Johnson. Edwards won the race at Homestead-Miami. It was a year when Kyle Busch won many of the races early in the year then fell apart in the Chase. Jeff Gordon failed to win a race all year. The next Cup race will be in February of 2009.
11/12/08 Homestead-Miami
One final race! Here is a look at the Sprint Cup standings.
1 Jimmie Johnson 6561 Leader
2 Carl Edwards 6420 -141
3 Greg Biffle 6358 -203
4 Jeff Burton 6292 -269
5 Kevin Harvick 6233 -328
6 Clint Bowyer 6226 -335
7 Jeff Gordon 6151 -410
8 Matt Kenseth 6091 -470
9 Denny Hamlin 6090 -471
10 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 6087 -474
11 Kyle Busch 6080 -481
12 Tony Stewart 6059 -502
The race to get into the top ten should be good from Kenseth back to Stewart. The top ten get a spot at the banquet in New York.
11/5/08 Arizona
Two races to go in the chase for the championship. Jimmie Johnson has a 106 point lead over Carl Edwards. Greg Biffle is 143 points in back of Johnson. Arizona and Homestead-Miami are left on the schedule. Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch are tied for the most wins this year. Both drivers have 8 Sprint Cup wins this season. Denny Hamlin of Chesterfield is 12th in the cup standings. Will this be the week that Jeff Gordon wins for the first time since October of 2007?
10/29/08 Texas Motor Speedway
Three races to go in the chase for the championship. Texas this coming Sunday then Phoenix and Homestead-Miami. What started back at Daytona on February 17th comes to an end November 16th down in Florida. Jimmie Johnson has a 183 point lead over Carl Edwards. Jimmie has six wins this season and fourteen top five finishes. Jimmie has one career win at Texas.
10/22/08 Atlanta Motor Speedway
It looks like Jimmie Johnson will win another Sprint Cup Championship. Jimmie now has a 149 point lead over Greg Biffle. South Boston native Jeff Burton is 152 points back. Johnson took the checkered flag at Martinsville. He led 339 of the 504 laps. Jimmie has won five times at Martinsville. What happened to Kyle Busch? Remember earlier this year it looked like the guy could not lose? Kyle Busch is 12th in the Chase for the Championship. Jeff Gordon has yet to win a race this year. Gordon last went to victory lane in October of 2007.
10/15/08 Martinsville
The Cup Circuit is back in Virginia for race 6 in the Chase for the Championship. Jeff Burton won last week down in North Carolina. Jeff is only 69 points back in the Chase. Fans at Martinsville this Sunday will be cheering for the South Boston, VA native...Talk this week is about the tires and the amount of cars that will be in the field in 2009. We could see Nationwide Series races with less than 43 cars...I was in Lexington, Kentucky this past weekend for a wedding. I had a chance to see some pretty good horsepower. I was at Kenneland. The horse race track in known around the world as one of the best.
10/8/08 Lowe's Motor Speedway
The Chase stops in North Carolina Saturday night. Jimmie Johnson sits atop the driver standings. Carl Edwards is second followed by Greg Biffle, Jeff Burton and Clint Bowyer. Denny Hamlin of Chesterfield is 12th in the standings. Tony Stewart won the cup race this past Sunday at Talladega. Hamlin was hurt in a crash, he now will battle to get into the top ten in the chase standings. The top ten get a seat at the NASCAR Banquet in New York later this year.
10/1/08 Talladega
Remember when Jeff Gordon seemed to win at least four or five times a year? Godon has yet to win a race this year. In fact his last win came 34 races ago at Lowe's Motor Speedway in October of 2007. Will this Sunday be win number one this year for Jeff? Jimmie Johnson leads the Chase for the Championship. Carl Edwards is second in the chase. Denny Hamlin of Chesterfield is 10th. My pick this Sunday at Talladega is Ricky Bobbie look for Cal Norton Jr. to finish second.
9/25/08 Kansas
Jeff Gordon has won two of the seven races at Kansas. Chesterfield native Denny Hamlin has struggled at Kansas. Denny has never finished on the lead lap at Kansas. He has finished 32nd, 18th and 29th at Kansas. Carl Edwards leads the Chase. The backflip king has a 10 point lead over Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle..I have lived in Virginia since 1997. I am amazed at the amount of car accidents here on rainy days. On my twenty minute drive to work today I could see four different car accident sites.
9/18/08 Dover
The Chase moves to the Monster Mile this Weekend. Qualifying at Dover is set for Friday afternoon and the Cup race takes place Sunday afternoon. Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson sit atop the Driver Standings. Don't expect Kevin Harvick to win this weekend. Harvick is winless in 15 Cup races at Dover and winless in 12 Nationwide Series Races at Dover. Chesterfield native Denny Hamlin has a Nationwide Series win at the Monster Mile. He has yet to win a cup race there. After Dover the Chase moves to Kansas.
9/10/08 New Hampshire
Jimmie Johnson won the race at Richmond this past Sunday. Jimmie has won three of the past four races at Richmond. Rain forced the race to be moved to Sunday. I was out at Richmond International Raceway Saturday morning at 5:00 a.m. doing live shots while Tropical Storm Hanna stopped by Central Virginia. I was soaked! The 12 drivers are now locked in for the Chase. Next stop New Hampshire.
9/5/08 Richmond and Rain
A home race this week. The drivers are at Richmond International Raceway. All eyes will be on Hanna. Rain is in the forecast. It is not a good idea to drive 120 miles per hour in the rain with 43 cars on the track. I will be out at RIR Saturday...Speaking of horsepower, I was on the sidelines last week for the USC/UVA game. USC is big and fast and no team will beat that team this year...Our NASCAR Show was a big hit. The ratings were great and I thank everyone that watched our half hour show..Stay dry this weekend.
8/29/08 California
The Cup drivers are out west this weekend. California is the sight for the Cup race. Bristol, California, Richmond = plenty of driving time for the men transporting the cars. I wonder when the Edwards/Busch feud will erupt. I will take Edwards if these guys go toe to toe..I am looking forward to our NASCAR Show next Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. on Fox Richmond. While the Cup drivers are out in California this weekend I will be on the sidelines watching Southern California play UVA in Charlottesville. Have a great weekend everyone!
8/22/08 Bristol
Carl Edwards will lead the 43 car field to green Saturday night. The race at Thunder Valley is one of the best to watch all year. Tempers flare and with drivers trying to get in or stay in the top 12 before the chase this should be great..Tough week for Joe Gibbs Racing on the Nationwide Series. Team was flat out caught cheating! Dale Junior said today he thought the penalties were not strict enough..WATCH OUR NASCAR SHOW WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3RD AT 10:30 P.M.
8/15/08 Michigan
Michigan is the sight for the cup race this Sunday..This week I had a chance to race against Nationwide Series Driver Landon Cassill. Tuesday Landon was in Richmond at G-Force Karts. Landon raced against guys in the media. He won two of the three races. The video will air during our NASCAR Special September 3rd on Fox Richmond at 10:30 p.m. Racing against Landon was fun, getting taken out by a bad driver in back of me was not. I was racing for the lead when I was drilled from behind. I can see why sometimes these drivers get out of the cars after being wrecked and want some answers. G-Force Karts is located across from Richmond International Raceway. Have a great weekend!
8/7/08 Watkins Glen
Right and left hand turns are on the menu this weekend. The cup series is in New York this weekend at Watkins Glen. Tony Stewart has won three of the past four races at this 2.45 mile track. Qualifying is set for 3pm Friday..I was up in Boston from Saturday until Wednesday. I went to the Red Sox game Sunday at Fenway Park and Tuesday I took a trip to Patriots Training Camp..Look for Tony Stewart to win Sunday.
8/1/08 Pocono
The Cup Series stops in Pocono this weekend. This is a place where Chesterfield native Denny Hamlin has raced well at..Yesterday two time cup champion Jimmie Johnson was in Richmond. Jimmie was in good mood. He won last Sunday at Indianapolis. I had a chance to do a one on one interview with Jimmie. The interview will air September 3rd on our NASCAR Show at 10:30pm on FOX Richmond. Jimmie has won two of the last three races at Richmond. We are now in August one month away from The Chase for the Championship... Have a great weekend everyone.
7/24/08 Indianapolis
The Sprint Cup race this weekend will take place at Indianapolis. Qualifying takes place Saturday morning with the race set for Sunday..Today I went over to see Junie Donlavey at his race shop. I interviewed Junie for a story that will air on our NASCAR Show September 3rd on Fox at 10:30 p.m. Junie spoke about how much he loves going to races at Southside Speedway..I was up at Redskins Training Camp Tuesday. Great to see the 'Skins back on the field..I just got off the phone with Queen Harrison. Queen graduated from Hermitage High School and she will run in the Olympics (400 meter hurdles)over in China. I will interview her on Friday..Look for Tony Stewart to win the Cup race Sunday.
7/17/08 No Cup Race this Weekend
The Sprint Cup Circuit is off this weekend. The next Cup race is not until July 27th at Indianapolis..Kyle Busch won the race last week at Chicagoland. Jimmie Johnson should have won the race but a late caution flag gave Kyle a chance and he took advantage of it...I am working on our NASCAR Show. The NASCAR Show will air September 3rd on FOX Richmond.
7/10/08 Chicagoland
The Sprint Cup Circuit stops in Illinois this weekend. A rare Qualifying session on Thursday night. The Cup race will take place Saturday night..Tony Stewart will leave Joe Gibbs Racing at the end of 2008. I have never seen Tony Stewart and Lance Berkman of the Houston Astros in the same room. I think they are the same person..Testing this week took place in Kentucky. I was in Kentucky over the 4th of July Holiday. Kentucky is a great state. We stayed in Lexington and had a great time. When in Kentucky you must have the beer cheese (sold at grocery stores)this is a food I have only seen sold in Kentucky. If you could find a way to sell the food to other states you would make some money.
7/2/08 Daytona
The Sprint Cup Circuit returns to Daytona this weekend. On this date 20 years ago Bill Elliott started 38th at the Pepsi Firecracker 400 and he came all the way to the front and won the race. The furthest a driver at Daytona has started then won a race..I am starting to produce another half hour NASCAR Show that will air Wednesday, September 3rd on FOX Richmond. The show will air three days before the race at Richmond..Look for Tony Stewart or Little E. to win the race Saturday night at Daytona. Have a great 4th of July weekend.
6/27/08 New Hampshire
NASCAR has come such a long way. Proof is a Sprint Cup Race in New Engalnd. Fifty years ago people would have laughed about the idea of having a NASCAR race in New England. This weekend a huge crowd will gather for the race. New England will forever be Red Sox territory. I am from Rhode Island and know first hand about the love for the Red Sox. When in New England you can talk about the Sox with anyone from Connecticut to Maine. I watched the Sox game on Wednesday. Carl Edwards and David Ragan were at the game for Roush Fenway Racing. Ragan threw out the first pitch. The Red Sox TV crew asked Carl Edwards if he were a baseball fan. After some awkward silence he said "not really." Bad answer Carl, the right answer should have been "yes I love the Red Sox."
6/20/08 Sonoma and My Adventure on the Road
The Sprint Cup Series is out in California this weekend for a road course race. I have just come back from the road. A four day vacation down in North Carolina. My road course trip was over 700 miles long. I took my wife and four year old daughter down to Nags Head, North Carolina. Due to the fire burning out of control in the Dismal Swamp bugs and smoke were everywhere in Nags Head. Our Ocean Front room was filled with hundreds of bugs! We decided not to pay $260.00 a night to be bitten by bugs. Do we return home to Richmond? No,we stopped at a gas station and bought a map of North Crolina. We decided to travel to Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. We passed a sign I will never forget, it read "WATCH FOR BEARS THE NEXT TEN MILES". I thought what do I do if I see the bears? Five and a half hours later we had made the trip from Nags Head to Wilmington. Our vacation at Wrightsville Beach made up for the horrible experience at Nags Head. I think the road will be less of an adventure this weekend for the Sprint Cup Drivers.
6/12/08 Michigan
Michgan is where cars are king and the Cup Series stops this weekend. Qualifying is set for Friday and the race is Sunday..Speaking of king, Richard Petty and Boston Ventures have teamed up. We will see if the King can get a driver back in victory lane..Danica Patrick will test at Richmond International Raceway this coming Monday, June 16th. The green flag drops for the IRL race here on June 28th.
6/5/08 Pocono
Sunday the cup drivers stop at Pocono. This is a place where Chesterfield native Denny Hamlin does well at. Denny won a cup race at Pocono and after the race he said he learned to drive the course while playing a video game...Kyle Busch won last week at Dover. Love or hate this guy it is pretty funny when he gets out of the car and bows to the crowd. More than half of the crowd is giving him the number one hand gesture. Have a great weekend!
5/28/08 The Monster Mile
Sunday the Sprint Cup drivers make left hand turns at The Monster Mile. Dover is the sight for the race. Kasey Kahne had a great week down in North Carolina. Kasey won the ALL-Star Race and the Coca Cola 600...The talk this week is about what track will lose a race because Kentucky Speedway will be getting a Cup race starting in 2009. The schedule is packed with races so a track will lose one race. Will it be Pocono or Dover or another track?
5/22/08 Coca Cola 600
The longest race of the NASCAR season takes place Sunday night down in North Carolina. 6oo miles of left turns. I was thinking about the longest one day drives I have ever been on. I once drove 16 hours from Richmond to Memphis, Tennessee for UVA in the NCAA Tournament. That was a drive where I felt like kissing the ground when I got to the hotel. I have made the drive from Richmond to Rhode Island about a dozen times. Getting over the George Washington Bridge in New York one time took three hours to go three miles...Kyle Busch is on the pole for the longest race of the year. Have a great weekend!
5/16/08 All Star Week
The NASCAR drivers love this time of the season. One month of races in the south. The drivers get to stay close to home. Saturday is the ALL-Star Race, no points on the line just a lot of cash..Here are my thoughts on Darlington. I watched Kyle Busch hit the wall hard over and over and he still won the race. I understand that Darlington stripes are part of the race at The Lady in Black however this race turned out to be a joke. This was like giving four strikes to a batter, five downs to an offense, 7 fouls to a basketball player. It did not feel like a real race, something of an arena football game.
5/9/08 Darlington
This should be fun at the Lady in Black. Darlington under the lights, new pavement and the speeds will be way up. Will Kyle Busch get taken out? Will Dale Jr. win his first points race since May 2006? Coverage on Fox Richmond begins Saturday night at seven o'clock...I had a one on one satellite interview with Dan Wheldon. Dan won the Indy 500 in 2005. Interesting fact about Dan, the man owns over 300 pairs of shoes!..I was out at Richmond International Raceway last Saturday doing live shots from 6 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. I watched a man riding a bike drinking a beer. I looked at my watch and it said 6:50 a.m.
5/2/08 Richmond
This is race week here in Richmond. I was out at the Kroger Night With the Drivers last night. I interviewed Kyle Petty, Bobby Labonte, Boris Said and Greg Biffle. All the drivers were very nice. The drivers met fans and signed autographs with the money going to the Victory Junction Gang Camp charity. I am going to the Nationwide race tonight and the Cup race Saturday night..Thank You to all of you that watched our half hour NASCAR show Wednesday night. The ratings were great and we appreciate your support...Will Saturday be the day that Dale Earnahrdt Jr. wins his first points race since 2006? Our coverage begins at 7pm Saturday night.
4/23/08 Talladega
The Cup Drivers return to action for the first time in a couple weeks. Talladega is the place this Sunday. If you have the need for speed this is the race for you. Cars reaching speeds of 195 miles per hour. Michael Waltrip had the fastest time today during practice. Will Dale Earnhardt Jr. win this weekend? You can see the race here on Fox Richmond Sunday afternoon...I have spent much of the week producing the NASCAR Show Special that will air Wednesday, April 30th at 10:30 p.m. on Fox Richmond. The show will get you set for race week.
4/15/08 Richard Petty Driving Experience
This past week I drove a stock car around Richmond International Raceway. I took part in the Kings Experience. Eighteen laps around RIR in a 650 horsepower car that looked like the Jimmie Johnson car #48. It was awesome, 102 miles per hour was my top speed. Pretty cool when you think you never touch the brake. Turn 2 at RIR is the trickiest. You are going over 100 miles per hour then dive down into the turn without touching the brake then speed up coming out of the turn. The story I did on driving the car will air on Fox Richmond April 30th at 10:30pm.
4/2/08 Texas
The Sprint Cup Series stops in Texas this weekend. Chesterfield native Denny Hamlin is riding high after his win at Martinsville. Great to see Denny win in his home state. It would be great to see him win at Richmond International Raceway next month. I am looking forward to the May 3rd race at the Action Track. Qualifying is set for Friday afternoon. You can watch the race here on Fox Sunday afternoon. Coverage from Texas begins at 1:30 p.m.
3/27/08 Martinsville
The Sprint Cup Series comes to Virginia this weekend. Martinsville is the sight for the race. Martinsville seems to be a nice balance between racing at Bristol and racing at Richmond. The drivers drive hard into the corners and there is plenty of good racing at Martinsville. You can watch the race here on Fox Richmond Sunday at 1:30 p.m...The Nationwide drivers tested at Richmond International Raceway this past Monday and Tuesday. The Natiowide Series and Sprint Cup series will race at RIR the first weekend of May.
3/20/08 Testing at RIR
This coming Monday and Tuesday the Nationwide Series drivers will test at Richmond International Raceway. A few of the drivers scheduled to test are Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards & Matt Kenseth, you can watch the test for free bring the kids & sit in the grandstands...The Sprint Cup series is off this weekend for Easter.
3/11/08 Tony Stewart
After finishing second in the Kobalt Tools 500 down in Atlanta Tony Stewart called the Goodyear tires "the most pathetic racing tires I've ever been on in my professional career." In a TV interview shortly after the checkered flag Tony called the tires "crap". Tony needs to be quiet and race.Tony you finished second! If you are that upset you can talk with NASCAR and Goodyear about the problem. You don't have to call them out in front of the entire country...This week the Sprint Cup Series stops in Thunder Valley. The race at Bristol should be fun and no doubt tempers will flare as the drivers take the wheel in this bull ring.
3/6/08 Atlanta
The Sprint Cup series moves to Georgia this weekend. Carl Edwards paid a heavy price for violations found by officials after the Vegas race. Docking Carl 100 points dropping him from first in the points race to 7th was way to
heavy a price to pay...I am happy to see the races back on the East Coast after races out in Vegas and California. I am a fan of the earlier start times. You can watch the race from Atlanta Motor Speedway here on Fox Richmond. Our coverage begins at 1:30 p.m.
2/29/08 Vegas!
The Sprint Cup Series is in Las Vegas this weekend. Vegas is a city that I helped build, with losses at the casinos. I am looking forward to a race that is not delayed by rain, started, stopped and then postponed. The race fans in California deserved better..Qualifying for the Vegas race is set for tonight. You can see the race on Fox Richmond Sunday afternoon...The May race in Richmond has a name. The Crown Royal Presents the Dan Lowry 400.He is a fan from Ohio and now his name will be featured during the May race at Richmond International Raceway.
2/22/08 Daytona
Hello Newman! The Sprint Cup season started with a surprise winner. Nobody was talking about Ryan Newman. The man who drives for Roger Penskie proved just like George Costanza that he is Penskie material...Qualifying for the next race is set for Friday night out in California. I will show you who is on the pole and we will run down the field for the race on Sunday that you can watch on Fox Richmond.
